so, yeah, we moved...and if anyone wants my new address, you'll need to ask for it.

i didn't have my mail forwarded because i didn't want the spam to follow me as well. i realized just recently that i don't think any of you got the new address...so if you want it, you'll need to PM, email, or otherwise message me.

i don't really have much to say, otherwise. i'm having fun planting things in the yard, a lot less fun fighting back the vines that were allowed to run rampant by the previous owner. i don't even know what they ARE, just that they seem to take on a lot of different forms depending on what's needed to take over a given area. the only reason i'm almost certain it's all the same vine is because of the leaf morphology. otherwise, the stems can be woody and nearly branchlike, totally vine-like with tendrils, or vine-like with adhesive bits. they make the fence look quite nice, i just don't like that i have to keep an eye on them or they try to grow up trees and strangle them, or take over my lawn, or grow up under my garage siding. also, i don't like how many mosquitoes they seem to harbor. i can't go out in my yard if it's overcast, and even if it's sunny god forbid i go into shady spots unless it's REALLY hot. i plan to spray the fenceline with a mosquito spray. i'd rather spray the vines directly and stay out of the yard for a half hour or so, than spray myself with bug spray every time i want to go out there, and even then not be able to stay out for long, lest i get eaten alive. we'll see if it works. if not, it was worth a shot.

anyhoo, i don't have much else to say. i'm quite boring, really. i don't know when i'll have the time/motivation/computer to be online again, since i have a bunch of house projects going (and i feel strangely antisocial lately) but i'll do my best.

I destroyed virginia creeper within a 2 mile by cam (2.00 / 0) #4 Sun Jun 29, 2008 at 10:46:10 PM EST
radius of my house in Virginia because I got poison ivy on me and mixed those two up. I even went down the farm road behind us and poisoned any virginia creeper I could find. Didnt realise my mistake until two years later.

i'm tempted by LilFlightTest (4.00 / 1) #5 Sun Jun 29, 2008 at 10:59:30 PM EST
but i'm going to leave most of it, because it lends a lot of privacy to my back yard. my first battle was with the stuff on the garage, second i reclaimed my picket fence and a tree. last weekend i cleared a lilac bush and more tree. i'm replacing part of what i took off with sunflowers- they're pretty and tall enough to mostly block the view into the yard. another part is being planted in hollyhocks. the part of the fence that has the tree in it is getting a clematis.

Do they bloom? by ana (2.00 / 0) #2 Sun Jun 29, 2008 at 09:59:53 PM EST
This sounds a bit like Purple Nightshade, which about this time of year if undisturbed has purple flowers on it; and develops rather attractive red berries later in the season. The stuff damn near strangled my garden in Wisconsin. Climbed up the remains of a winter-killed cherry tree, and what with not looking carefully, convinced me it was time to go pick cherries when the berries came out.

It also has a distinctive smell when you bruise the leaves, and sends runners meters long just under the surface of the soil.

Evil, evil weed.

i did a little research just now by LilFlightTest (2.00 / 0) #3 Sun Jun 29, 2008 at 10:42:10 PM EST
i think it's probably a virginia creeper. it blooms, and i was actually wondering this morning if what i saw coming was actually floral in nature...i guess if they turn red this fall, i know.

mosquitos by iGrrrl (2.00 / 0) #6 Sun Jun 29, 2008 at 11:15:24 PM EST
We have a mosquito magnet. We could not use our back yard without it. It was totally worth the money.

i thought about that by LilFlightTest (2.00 / 0) #7 Sun Jun 29, 2008 at 11:26:59 PM EST
but i wasn't sure if it would really work when they're using the vines as a hideout.

Landscaping? by Phil the Canuck (2.00 / 0) #9 Mon Jun 30, 2008 at 08:52:36 AM EST
I just got around to trimming some hedges and bits of yard work, because I was tired of them making the house look abandoned.  I pulled three maple saplings and three rose bushes that had sprouted up wild at some point.  They'd been there quite a while, no telling how long he'd left them to grow.
