every once and awhile, something i'm listening to catches me, stops me, and haunts me for the rest of the day.

there are songs on the radio i like merely for the fact that they show real talent in writing music...they go beyond the simple chords, whip out unexpected passages in minor keys...sometimes it's just that the instrumental parts absolutely do not resemble the vocals at all, yet when combined make beautiful music.

but tonight, what stirs my soul is classical. i won't tell you what i'm listening to, because each of you have your own song that does it: makes you breathe the music, give yourself over to it, and it gives you goosebumps with its simple beauty...and when chaotic passages full of dissonant chords and opposing rhythms gently slow and resolve in a perfect, pure chord, you can't help but sigh dreamily, as if you caught a glimpse of what heaven must be like.

there are a few vocalists whose voice holds me spellbound, as well. this recording, i don't know who he is, all i know is that he is an extremely talented countertenor. as tends to be the case with men singing in that register, his voice has an eerie, otherworldly quality, and it too gives me goosebumps...he has a purity that i can't even achieve. a level of control that i can only dream of.

times like this, nights like tonight...make me want to rearrange my hobbies, my free time, and spend it all learning to make truly beautiful music. i want the courage to sing my soul...and the chance to prove i can. i can't define a feeling like this...all i know is that music IS.
